Nurturing Growth, One Child at a Time

“Nurture a flower and watch it bloom.”

Every child deserves the right conditions to thrive.

Spring reminds us that growth takes time. With the right care, patience, and conditions, something small and delicate can become strong and full of life. The same is true for the children, teens, and families we support every day at Family Centre.

Everything that has life needs care and nurture. Yet, growth is not always easy or linear. Families face challenges, uncertainty, and moments that can feel overwhelming. For many children and teens, these experiences shape how they see themselves, connect with others, and move through the world.

Through Family Centre counselling, therapeutic groups, and community programmes, we provide consistent, wraparound support to help children and families heal, build resilience, and move forward with confidence. Whether it is a child learning to express their emotions, a teen finding their voice, or a family rebuilding connection, each step matters.

In the words of our founder, Martha Dismont:
“Like the dawn, nothing can stop the blossoming of children who have been loved.”

With the right support, every child and family has the potential to grow, to heal, and to bloom.

In this Spring newsletter, we are sharing how care and connection come to life across our programmes, and how, together, we continue to nurture brighter futures.

Family Centre Counselling Services Collaborate with Child & Adolescent Services

Thank you to the team at Bermuda Hospitals Board Child & Adolescent Services (CAS) for an engaging and informative workshop on Understanding Sensory Processing: Helping Your Child Regulate, Learn, and Thrive, hosted at Family Centre.

This interactive session led by Michelle Outerbridge (Occupational Therapist), alongside Kadaisha Fox (Mental Health Counsellor) and Topaz Webson (Psychology Assistant), provided families and professionals who work with children practical, everyday strategies to support children.

Through sensory break ideas, hands-on tools, and a deeper understanding of sensory processing differences, attendees left equipped with new knowledge and confidence. The CAS team also took time to answer individual questions, making the experience both personal and impactful.
We look forward to future collaborations to support children's wellbeing!

Community Programmes: Growing Through Connection

Preparing Bermuda's Young People for a Brighter Future

Family Centre Community Programmes help young people build confidence, develop life skills, and access new opportunities, while creating pathways to therapeutic support when needed. We help young people develop teamwork, decision-making, leadership, social skills, self-regulation, and a sense of accomplishment that comes from working to one’s fullest potential.

Spotlight on Beyond Programmes

Beyond Rugby Bermuda continues to create a safe, structured environment where young people build teamwork, discipline, and a strong sense of belonging. Through mentorship and shared experiences, participants learn to support one another both on and off the field.

In Beyond Yoga Bermuda, participants explored healthy eating through a hands-on "Farm to Table" salad-making activity in partnership with Food Forest.

Young people gained a deeper understanding of nourishment, sustainability, and mindful living after visiting the garden and learning where their food comes from.

Experiences like these support growth from the inside out, building awareness, confidence, and lifelong healthy habits for our young people.

Leadership Is Action, Not Position.

In their Own Voices: Don’t Label Me

In this powerful video, young people share their experiences of being seen, heard, and understood beyond labels. Programmes like Youth Leadership Academy create space for self-expression, confidence, and connection.

Congratulations Deneca! Family Centre Staff of the Quarter

Congratulations to Deneca Zuill, the inaugural recipient of the Family Centre Staff of the Quarter award!

Nominated by their peers, this award recognises staff who consistently go above and beyond while embodying Family Centre’s "I CARE" core values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Empowerment.

Deneca’s leadership, compassion, and dedication continue to make a meaningful impact across our Community Programmes. During Quarter 1, her work ranged from supporting young men navigating complex safety challenges, to leading initiatives that expand opportunities for growth and connection for youth.

She spearheaded the Youth Leadership Academy Career Fair, bringing together community partners to help young people explore future pathways with greater clarity and confidence. Deneca created a powerful Mother-Daughter session centered on love languages, where families deepened their understanding of one another through shared, hands-on experiences.

Beyond our programme delivery, Deneca is a constant source of support to both families and colleagues, approaching every situation with care, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed.

One team member reflected:

“Deneca's commitment to listening with understanding, while always planting seeds and reminding young people of all they are and who they can be is pure compassion in action.”

In recognition of her achievement, Deneca will enjoy a one-night stay, generously donated by Grotto Bay Beach Resort.
