The island’s high cost of living is affecting children and families negatively, the head of a charity said today.

Sandy DeSilva, executive director of Family Centre, said the Government needs to continue addressing this issue and that economic needs have a “significant impact on families’ stress levels”.

Dr De Silva spoke at an event at City Hall centred on children’s rights. The presentation, organised by Glenn Fubler, commemorated World Children’s Day.

Held annually, World Children’s Day celebrates the adoption of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

Lisa Reed, executive director of the Human Rights Commission, discussed children’s character during the event.
